The Roes Family

Milverton / Perth County, Ontario

What do you grow/raise on your farm?
Milk and eggs and a small amount of chicken and beef. We also grow forages to feed dairy cattle.

How long have you been farming organically?
We were certified October 2011.

What is most important to you about farming organically?
Initially it was for health reasons. I didn't want to be around the chemicals used in conventional farming and I didn't want my children exposed to them. Now I love having the animals outside on pasture.

Do you have any advice for folks who are considering getting into organic farming?
Just do it. I was worried I wouldn't be able to do it. I was worried weeds would take over the farm and the animals wouldn't do well. It was a learning curve but the transition went better than I expected. Also ask lots of questions. There are many organic producers who are happy to help new organic farmers.

What is your favourite chicken dish?
Our family loves honey baked chicken.

What is your favourite way to enjoy eggs?
Fried, I have some almost every day.

Our commitment to organic

When our founding farmers started farming in Ontario many years ago, they chose to grow organically because they knew it would provide the best products for their families and friends.
