WHAT DOES FREE RANGE MEAN?

Yorkshire Valley hens live in nice Ontario barns with lots of personal space. In the barn, the birds can roam about freely, with nests and perches to lay their eggs and the opportunity to have some fresh air. They enjoy a diet of pesticide- and herbicide-free grains, with no animal by-products added.

WHAT'S PASTURE-RAISED?

In addition to following organic practices, our pasture egg growers are able to offer the hens an enhanced pasture environment, with more space for the hens to roam outdoors to forage and enhance their diet with grasses, insects, and other natural matter. Our pasture program is a special seasonal offering, available in limited quantities late spring to early fall (weather permitting).

BEYOND BEST PRACTICES

Unlike Organic, “pasture-raised” is not a defined term with set practices that must be followed. Yorkshire Valley Farms has taken the lead to define our pasture program, and establish standards that all of our pasture growers must meet.

Yorkshire Valley Hens get:

  • Daily pasture access during pasture season, weather permitting
  • Enlarged pasture area, with minimum 1.85m2 (20ft2) per hen
  • Pasture rotation throughout season to encourage foraging
  • Herbicide-and pesticide-free pastures
  • Organic grain feed
  • No animal by-products added
  • Cage-free barn with nests and perches for laying
  • Small flocks raised on family-run farms in Ontario
